세존사 프로젝트는 부산 수영구에 위치한 대한불교조계종 소속의 중소규모 사찰을 대상으로, 전통 법당의 본질을 유지하면서 동시대적 공간 언어로 새롭게 해석한 종교건축 프로젝트입니다. 종교건축은 시대적 환경과 포교 방식의 변화에 따라 그 형태와 공간 구성을 유연하게 변화시켜 왔지만, 수행과 깨달음, 공동체를 위한 중심 철학은 지속되어 왔습니다. 본 프로젝트는 이러한 불교건축의 역사적 흐름을 바탕으로 세존사가 지역사회 안에서 수행과 포교의 역할을 이어갈 수 있는 현대적인 법당의 모습을 제안하였습니다.

디자인은 세존사가 축적해 온 역사와 부산 지역의 장소성, 대한불교조계종이 지닌 전통적 가치와 불교 철학을 종합적으로 고려하여 하나의 절제된 박스 형태로 구현하였습니다. 외부의 박스는 단순한 기하학적 조형이 아니라, 전통 사찰 건축의 기둥과 창호, 처마, 반복적인 구조 질서를 현대적인 파사드 언어로 재해석한 것입니다. 또한 전통 단청의 색채를 물질적인 장식으로 재현하는 대신, 스테인드글라스를 통과하는 빛의 색으로 변환하여 내부로 끌어들였습니다. 시간과 계절에 따라 변화하는 빛은 공간에 머무르며 무상과 순환이라는 불교적 사유를 감각적으로 드러냅니다.

법당 내부에는 우주적 완전성과 무한한 순환을 상징하는 구의 공간을 구현하였습니다. 중심을 향해 집중되는 공간 구성은 예불과 수행의 몰입감을 강화하면서도, 어느 한 방향에 고정되지 않는 구의 특성을 통해 모든 존재가 서로 관계 맺고 있음을 의미하는 연기적 세계관을 표현합니다. 이를 통해 전통적 권위에 머무르는 법당이 아니라, 개인과 공동체, 지역과 종교가 서로 연결되는 열린 수행 공간을 조성하고자 하였습니다. 세존사만의 역사와 지역 조계종 사찰로서의 역할을 존중하면서도, 불교의 본질적인 철학을 동시대의 건축과 빛, 공간의 언어로 새롭게 전달한 프로젝트입니다.

The Sejonsa Temple project reinterprets the traditional Buddhist worship hall through a contemporary architectural language while preserving its essential spiritual character. Located in Suyeong-gu, Busan, Sejonsa is a mid-sized temple affiliated with the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. While religious architecture has continuously adapted to changing social conditions and evolving approaches to Buddhist outreach, its core values of practice, enlightenment, and community have remained constant. Based on this understanding, the project proposes a modern temple that enables Sejonsa to continue serving as a place of spiritual practice and engagement within the local community.

The design brings together the temple’s history, the regional identity of Busan, and the historical and philosophical values of the Jogye Order in the form of a restrained architectural box. This simple geometric volume reinterprets traditional temple elements, including columns, lattice windows, eaves, and repetitive structural rhythms, as a contemporary façade system. Rather than reproducing the colors of traditional dancheong as applied ornament, the project transforms them into colored light passing through stained glass and entering the interior. As the light changes throughout the day and across the seasons, it creates an evolving atmosphere that evokes Buddhist concepts of impermanence and cyclical existence.

At the center of the worship hall, a spherical spatial form represents cosmic completeness, infinity, and continuous circulation. The inward-focused composition strengthens concentration during worship and meditation, while the sphere’s non-directional geometry expresses the Buddhist principle of dependent origination, in which all beings and phenomena exist through mutual relationships. Through this approach, the project creates an open spiritual environment that connects the individual with the community, the temple with its region, and tradition with contemporary life. Respecting Sejonsa’s history and its role as a local Jogye Order temple, the project translates the fundamental philosophy of Buddhism into a contemporary language of architecture, light, and space.
