KIA Unplugged Ground Seongsu
Concept
기아의 첫 전기차인 EV6 출시에 맞춰 약 1년간 EV6 만을 홍보하기 위한 특화 거점을 구축하는 프로젝트로써, 언플러그드 그라운드라는 이름으로 성수동에 8월 27일 오픈하였다.
전시물인 EV6 차량의 특징인 긴 항속거리와 충전의 불편함에서 벗어나자는 슬로건인 Unplugged Journey에 초점을 맞춰 매 순간, EV6와 함께 떠나는 다채로운 여행을 뜻하는 ‘Moment Layer’ 가 본 언플러그드 그라운드 프로젝트의 디자인 컨셉이다.
언플러그드 그라운드 성수점은 얼리어답터 성향이 강한 2040 스마트 슈머를 타겟으로 한 거점으로 과거 방직공장이었던 곳을 전시장으로 탈바꿈하였다. 방직공장이었던 사이트의 장소성에 착안한 디자인 아이디어로 수많은 실타래와 실타래에서 나오는 실들을 차량과 함께 연출하여 장소성에 기반한 컨텍스트를 만들어 냈다, 과거 공장 지대였던 성수동이 가진 Grunge한 분위기와 기아의 첫 전기차라는 신기술을 공개하는 장소가 가지는 미래 지향적인 느낌이 서로 공존하는 영감의 장소가 되었다.
In alignment with the release of Kia's first electric vehicle, the EV6, a specialized hub dedicated solely to promoting the EV6 for approximately one year was established as a project. Named "Unplugged Ground," it opened in Seongsu-dong on August 27th.
The design concept of the Unplugged Ground project revolves around the slogan "Unplugged Journey," which aims to move away from the long range and charging inconvenience associated with EV6 vehicles. Focusing on the idea of embarking on diverse journeys with the EV6 at every moment, the concept is embodied in the "Moment Layer."
The Unplugged Ground in Seongsu is a hub targeting early adopters of 2040 smart shoes, transforming a former textile factory into an exhibition space. Drawing inspiration from the site's industrial heritage, the design incorporates numerous threads and yarns, staged alongside vehicles, to create a contextual experience rooted in placemaking. Seongsu-dong's gritty atmosphere, reminiscent of its past as a factory district, converges with the forward-looking vibe of showcasing Kia's first electric car, creating an inspiring space where past and future coexist.
Hello EV6
과거 섬유공장이었던 사이트의 장소성이 가장 잘 보존된 장소로서 전시관에 진입함과 동시에 보여지는 첫 번째 체험공간이다. 층고가 높으며 공장을 에워싸는 투박한 건축구조들이 그대로 노출되며 과거의 흔적을 볼 수 있는 공간이다.
이 중심에는 전시물인 EV6가 세워져 있으며 본 공간의 메인 인스톨레이션인 실타래가 전시물에서부터 시작되어 공장전체 벽면으로 이어지도록 연출된다. 실타래는 섬유공장이었던 본 사이트의 장소적 특징에서 영감을 받아 사용된 재료로서 475km 항속거리를 가진 EV6 전기차의 특성과 연결지어 475개의 실타래로 구성하였다. 또한 실타래와 연결된 실은 실제 EV6 차량에 사용된 재활용 섬유를 사용하여 의미를 부여하였고, 실타래에는 프로젝터를 투사하여 차량의 후면 미디어 컨텐츠와 차량을 비추는 스포트라이트가 서로 인터렉티브한 연출을 하도록 기획하였다.
본 전시공간의 하이라이트인 Hello EV6 공간은 역사, 현재, 미래가 미디어와 예술을 통해 컨택스트가 이어지는 본 프로젝트의 핵심 연출 공간이다.
As the site with the best-preserved sense of place from its past as a textile factory, it serves as the first experiential space visible upon entering the exhibition hall. With high ceilings and rugged architectural structures surrounding the factory, the space exposes the traces of the past, allowing visitors to witness the remnants of the factory's history.
At the center of this space stands the EV6, the main exhibit, surrounded by an installation of yarn that extends from the exhibit to cover the entire wall of the factory. Inspired by the site's historical significance as a textile factory, the yarn is composed of 475 strands, symbolizing the 475km range of the EV6 electric vehicle. Additionally, the yarn is connected to recycled fibers used in the actual EV6 vehicle, adding further meaning. Projectors are used to project media content onto the yarn, creating an interactive display that illuminates both the rear of the vehicle and the yarn itself with spotlights, enhancing the overall experience.
The highlight of this exhibition space, the "Hello EV6" area, serves as the core staging ground where the context of history, present, and future seamlessly intertwines through media and art.
EV6 Design philosophy
언플러그드 그라운드의 메인 연출 공간인 공장의 Grunge한 요소를 그대로 살린 Hello EV6와 전기차를 적극적으로 보여주는 EV6 Life를 이어주는 공간으로, 상반되는 두 공간을 자연스레 이어줄 수 있도록 진입하면서 인포그래픽과 디자인 스케치를 통해 EV6에 대한 흥미를 유발할 수 있도록 하였다.
Connecting the contrasting spaces of Hello EV6, which preserves the grungy elements of the factory, and EV6 Life, which actively showcases electric vehicles, is the main staging area of Unplugged Ground. Upon entry, visitors are naturally guided through infographics and design sketches to evoke interest in the EV6, seamlessly bridging the two contrasting spaces.

EV6에 대한 정보를 상세히 접할 수 있는 공간으로, 연출을 위해 다소 어두운 공간이었던 Hello EV6 ~ EV6 Life존과는 달리 기존 건축 요소였던 박공지붕과 창을 그대로 유지하여, 공장의 장소성을 경험하며 EV6의 상세한 정보를 접할 수 있도록 하였다.
To provide detailed information about the EV6, the space maintains the existing architectural elements such as exposed wooden beams and windows, preserving the sense of place within the factory while offering access to comprehensive EV6 details. This space contrasts with the somewhat dimly lit Hello EV6 to EV6 Life zone, enhancing the experiential aspect of the EV6 and allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the factory's ambiance.
EV6 Life
Moment Layer라는 컨셉에 맞춰 공간 내에 여러 개의 레이어 형태 구조물을 배치하고 이동 시퀀스에 따라 극적인 공간변화를 경험을 할 수 있도록 디자인하였다.
공간에 진입하며 입구 > 출구 방향으로 바라볼 때와 공간을 빠져나오며 출구 > 입구 방향을 바라볼 때 공간은 레이어의 앞뒤면의 마감을 다르게 하여 시각적으로 완전히 다르게 보이도록 연출하였다. 입구 > 출구 의 시점은 어두운 공간에 라인 조명의 순차적 연출을 활용하여, 속도감을 통해 차를 타고 신나는 여행을 하는 듯한 경험을 제공하며, 공간을 지나 출구 > 입구 방향을 바라볼 때는 밝은 레이어 면에 컬러풀한 조명이 워싱 되도록 연출하여 빛의 볼륨 안에 차량과 사람이 플로팅 되는 듯한 경험을 주도록 연출하였다.
관람 동선을 따라 레이어 사이 공간인 포켓 공간에는 체험 요소와 정보를 키워드 중심으로 배치하여 관람객들이 어렵게 느껴질 수 있는 정보들을 직관적으로 알아 볼 수 있도록 구성하였다.
In line with the concept of Moment Layer, various layered structures are strategically positioned within the space, allowing visitors to experience dramatic spatial transformations as they move through different sequences.
As visitors enter the space, the design intentionally contrasts the finish of the front and back surfaces of the layers, creating a visually distinct experience when viewed from the entrance to the exit and vice versa. When looking from entrance to exit, the space utilizes sequential lighting effects along with a dark environment to evoke a sense of speed, simulating an exhilarating journey as if riding in a car. Conversely, when exiting and looking back from exit to entrance, colorful lighting washes over the bright layer surfaces, creating an experience where vehicles and people appear to float within the volume of light.
Along the viewing route, within the pocket spaces between layers, experiential elements and information are arranged around keywords, facilitating intuitive understanding of potentially complex information for visitors.
