본 프로젝트 대상지는 과거 숙명여자대학교 내 한식 전통 식당으로 운영되던 곳입니다. 리모델링 전 현장은 세월의 흔적이 남은 어두운 톤의 우드 마루 바닥과 노후화된 구형 매립 조명, 정돈되지 않은 마감과 노출된 전선 등이 그대로 방치되어 공간의 효율성과 심미성이 크게 저하된 상태였습니다. 이에 기존 식당 용도의 단조롭고 노후화된 구조를 전면 철거하고, 대학교의 혁신적인 첨단 연구와 교육을 견인할 수 있는 현대적인 연구소 공간으로의 대대적인 탈바꿈을 기획하였습니다.

새롭게 구축된 ‘디지털 휴머니티 랩’은 고정된 형태에 머무르지 않고 사용자의 요구에 따라 유연하게 대응할 수 있는 공간의 가변성을 핵심 가치로 삼았습니다. 이에 따라 다채로운 학술 세미나, 문화 공연, 그리고 자유로운 휴식과 네트워킹이 가능한 라운지 기능까지 아우르는 복합 공간 프로그램을 정립하였습니다.
공간의 중심에는 와이드 미디어 스크린(Wide Media Screen)을 배치하여, 다양한 디지털 프로그램과 학술 콘텐츠가 유기적으로 교류하는 커뮤니케이션의 허브를 구축했습니다. 이를 통해 랩실은 단순한 연구 공간을 넘어, 유연한 상호작용이 일어나는 유동적인 플랫폼으로 기능합니다.

건축 내외부의 시각적 소통과 유기적인 연결을 위해 외부 벽면에 새로운 창을 과감히 개착하였습니다. 이를 통해 과거 한식당이 품고 있던 한국적인 비주얼의 전통 정원을 내부로 끌어들이는 '차경(借景)'을 의도하였습니다.
내부 연구실의 세련되고 모던한 톤앤매너와 창 너머로 펼쳐지는 사계절 조경의 동양적인 미감이 강렬한 시각적 컨트라스트(Contrast)를 이루며 공존합니다. 내부에서 외부를 바라볼 때 정원의 아름다운 사계절 변화가 하나의 살아있는 액자처럼 투영되도록 연출함으로써, 기술 중심의 디지털 랩 공간에 자연의 온기와 깊이감을 더하는 조화로운 공간 경험을 완성했습니다.

The project site, originally operated as a traditional Korean restaurant at Sookmyung Women's University, was an outdated vacant space. Characterized by weathered dark wooden flooring, obsolete recessed lighting, unrefined finishes, and exposed wire bundles, the original site suffered from severely compromised spatial efficiency and aesthetic value. Stripping away the monotonous, aged structures of the former dining facility, the project was conceived to thoroughly transform the area into a state-of-the-art research laboratory that drives innovative academic study and education.

The newly established 'Digital Humanity Lab' embraces spatial flexibility and adaptability as its core values, allowing the environment to evolve dynamically based on user needs. To support this, a hybrid spatial program was developed, seamlessly integrating versatile academic seminars, cultural performances, and lounge spaces designed for relaxation and networking.
At the heart of the space, a wide media screen is strategically positioned to create a communication hub where various digital programs and academic contents organically interface. This elevates the lab beyond a conventional research facility, establishing it as a fluid platform for flexible interaction.

To foster a seamless visual dialogue between the interior and exterior, new expansive windows were seamlessly integrated into the architectural facade. This architectural intervention introduces the concept of 'Borrowed Scenery (Chakyung),' drawing the traditional, quintessentially Korean visual landscape of the existing garden into the research environment.
The sleek, modern tone-and-manner of the internal lab space stands in striking visual contrast with the oriental aesthetics of the changing seasons outside. By framing the shifting seasons of the landscape like a living canvas, this design approach infuses the technology-driven digital lab with natural warmth and depth, achieving a harmonious, enriched spatial experience.
