남산자락에 위치한 용산국제학교는 초·중·고가 통합된 국제학교로, 소수 정예 학생들이 자유로운 환경에서 다양한 커리큘럼을 수학하고 있다. 사이트는 캠퍼스 건물로 둘러싸인 중앙 광장에 위치하며, 평소에는 주차장으로 사용되지만 이벤트 시 광장으로 활용되는 공간이다.
이전에는 광장을 마주한 건물의 입면이 단순한 조적 마감과 창호 디자인으로 학교의 정체성을 충분히 드러내지 못하였다. 이번 프로젝트에서는 남산의 벚꽃나무에서 영감을 받아 자연적 장소성을 입면 디자인에 반영하였으며, 이를 통해 광장의 상징성과 배경 역할을 동시에 강화하였다.
총 10,000여 개의 알루미늄 모듈을 각기 다른 각도로 배치하여 색이 아닌 음영으로 벚꽃 형상을 표현하였으며, 이는 보는 거리나 날씨에 따라 이미지가 달리 보이는 변화 가능성이 있는 파사드를 만들어냈다.

Yongsan International School, located on the slopes of Namsan, offers a diverse curriculum for a select group of students from primary to high school in a liberal academic setting. The site sits in a central plaza surrounded by campus buildings, functioning as a parking lot during the day and transforming into an event space when needed.
Previously, the building facade facing the plaza lacked identity due to its basic masonry and window design. In this project, the new facade draws inspiration from Namsan’s cherry blossom trees to strengthen the school’s presence and enhance the plaza’s role as an event backdrop.
Around 10,000 aluminum modules, angled differently, create a cherry blossom silhouette through shadow rather than color. This generative facade changes its appearance based on weather and viewing distance, offering a dynamic and lasting visual impact.
