대전 둔산동에 위치한 갤러리아 타임월드점은 1986년 동양백화점을 시작으로 35년간 대전 시민의 일상과 함께한 대표적인 상업시설이다. 대전 원도심의 중심에 자리한 이곳은 단순한 유통 공간을 넘어 시민들에게 심리적 중심지로 기능하며, 도시의 상징적인 장소로 자리잡아 왔다.
이번 프로젝트는 이러한 장소성을 기반으로 갤러리아를 도시와 시민 모두에게 반응하는 지속가능한 소통의 장소이자, 상징적 랜드마크로 재정의하고자 했다. 특히 둔산동 일대가 획일적인 콘크리트로 채워진 전형적인 도시 이미지인 점에 주목해, 자연적이고 생태적인 이미지를 담은 새로운 파사드 디자인을 제안했다.
‘Urban Bloom’이라는 컨셉 아래, 건물 외피는 마치 도심 속 꽃이 피어난 듯한 형태로 구성되었으며, 총 7,000여 개의 서로 다른 크기와 형태를 지닌 꽃잎 모듈로 이루어졌다. 이는 자연물처럼 각기 다른 개체로 보이도록 알고리즘을 통해 설계되었고, 기존 건축물을 부드럽게 감싸는 유기적인 형상을 만든다.
또한 각 모듈의 중심에는 LED 조명이 내장되어, 낮에는 생명력 있는 볼륨감으로, 밤에는 미디어 파사드로 기능한다. 도시의 환경 정보, 시민의 얼굴과 감정 등 다양한 콘텐츠가 실시간으로 반영되는 이 미디어 파사드는 정보 공유와 시민 참여를 가능하게 하며, 동시에 도시의 야간 경관에 활력을 불어넣는다.

The Galleria Timeworld in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon, has served as a symbolic commercial hub for the city since 1986, functioning not only as a major retail space but also as a psychological center for its citizens. Given its central location and long-standing presence, the project reimagines the building as a sustainable urban landmark—one that communicates with both its environment and the people who inhabit it.
Surrounded by uniform concrete and curtain wall structures, the Galleria’s new façade introduces a striking contrast through the concept of Urban Bloom. Inspired by nature, the design features over 7,000 uniquely shaped flower petal modules, created using algorithmic design to simulate the diversity found in natural organisms. These petals wrap around the existing architecture to form a soft, organic volume within the rigid urban context.
Each petal includes an integrated LED light, forming a low-pitch media façade that displays real-time content such as environmental data, citizen images, and emotional expressions. This not only enables information sharing and public participation, but also injects new energy into the city’s nighttime scenery, transforming the building into a dynamic and interactive landmark.
